Museo Semblanza de Heroes Paraguay

This small but interesting museum is divided in two sections. The first contains relics from the Guerra del Chaco and the Triple Alliance war including some interesting paintings depicting key battles as well as portraits of now aging war veterans. The second room contains a large collection of full sized black and white photos from the war. There are also several displaying road constructions throughout Paraguay after the war. Centro de Documentation Archivos de la Dictadura Stronista/Casa de las Victimas

Located across the street from the church in one of the sections of the casa de indios this documentation center is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of the Stroessner dictatorship and the human rights abuses that took place throughout. In this small office people from the surrounding areas come to have their testimony of past interrogation and torture documented. Many of these victims participated in the Ligas Agrarias Christianas (Christian Agrarian Leagues) which worked to organize rural Paraguayans during the 1960’s and 1970’s. One of the center’s most interesting books is a small hand written and illustrated book by the members of a small neighboring community detailing their experience with the Ligas Agrarias and the repression that ensued. Though the book is entirely written in Guarani the cartoonish illustrations manage to depict the story quite clearly. With testimonies and news clippings posted throughout, the center is quite powerful. This is especially true when you see names of known torturers from the Stroessner era painted on the wall -many of whom are still alive and residing in the area today.
