44 Pittsburgh St, Boston; (617)737-8757

Here’s a rare combination: good value along the waterfront tourist trail. For quality and quantity, the Old Spaghetti Factory ranks up there with the best of em. It’s a big, boisterous, family-oriented restaurant and feeding the kids here won’t gouge a hole in their college fund. The menu, of course, consists of pasta dishes from spaghetti with mushroom sauce to ravioli to fet-tucine Alfredo. All the entrees are well under $10, with most in the $6 to $7 price range. The best deals by far are located under the complete meal selection; each choice includes salad, fresh baked bread, coffee, tea or milk, plus a spumoni dessert Basic beers, wines, and cocktails are also available.

The decor in the restaurant is a story in itself. The booths are actually made from the head- and foot-boards of brass and wrought-iron beds. Tif-fany-style, fringed fabric lampshades hang close overhead and give a soft light to the otherwise dark dining room; you may almost miss the cable car sitting in the middle of the room, which offers additional seating in an even more unlikely setting.

It’s open Mondays through Thursdays, from 11:30 A.M. to 2 P.M. for lunch, and 5 P.M. to 10 P.M. for dinner (Fridays til 11 P.M.). Weekend hours are from noon to 11 p.m. Saturdays, and from noon to 10 p.m. Sundays.
