FISHLAKE NATIONAL FOREST
Consisting of four separate tracts of land in southcentral Utah, Fishlake National Forest includes some high mountain ranges, plateaus, and deep red-rock canyons. Among several mountains over
12,000 feet is 12,173-foot Delano Peak, the highest. There are no designated wilderness areas.
In the region are many streams, lakes, and ponds, along with open meadows, alpine vegetation, and desert floraplus stands of fir and spruce, pine and aspen, and pinyon-juniper. Wildlife includes elk, antelope, deer, black bear, mountain goat, and mountain lion.
Activities: There are 1,040 miles of trails for backpacking and hiking, including a section of the Great Western Trail (see entry page 278). Difficulty varies from easy to strenuous. High trails may be under snow until July.
Most trails are open to horseback riding, and many may be used for mountain biking. Crosscountry skiing is possible during the snow season. Mountaineering is also available. Some streams and lakes are suitable for fishing. Hunting is permitted in season.
Cam ping Regulations: Camping is allowed throughout most of the National Forest, as are campfires, except near public use areas or where otherwise prohibited. No permits are required.
