NICOLET NATIONAL FOREST
661,000 acres. Located in northeastern Wisconsin, this National Forest has hilly and occasionally rugged terrain with some rock formations. Elevations range from 860 feet to 1,880 feet, and fine views are available.
Several major rivers flow through the forest, which also has a large number of streams, over 1,200 lakes, and some swamps and bogs. Trees include hardwoods along with hemlock and pine. Black bear and white-tailed deer are among the region’s wildlife.
There are three designated wilderness areas: the 20,000-acre Headwaters Wilderness, the 7,500-acre Whisker Lake Wilderness, and the 5,890-acre Blackjack Springs Wildernessplus several additional Non-Motorized Areas where vehicles are prohibited.
Activities: About 100 miles of hiking and backpacking trails are available in the forest. Many of the trails are used for cross-country skiing in winter, and snowshoeing is also possible.
There are numerous opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and rafting on the rivers here, as well as on many lakes. Fishing is also available. Hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: A number of established primitive campsites are located throughout the forest. Camping is allowed elsewhere else as well, except near public use areas or where posted otherwise. No permits are required.
Campfires are legal, but the use of a stove for cooking is recommended. Visitors are encouraged
to camp at least 100 feet from lakes and streams, and away from trails.
