BIGHORN NATIONAL FOREST
1,107,670 acres. This National Forest in north-central Wyoming is located in the Bighorn Mountains, an area of high rocky peaks, steep canyons, and glaciers, along with some major rivers and hundreds of lakes and streams.
There are also alpine meadows and forests of spruce, fir, pine, and aspen. Wildlife includes elk,
moose, deer, black bear, bighorn sheep, and coyote.
Bighorn has one designated wilderness area: the 195,500-acre Cloud Peak Wilderness, which surrounds 13,167-foot Cloud Peak, highest point in the National Forest.
Activities: More than 600 miles of trails are available for hiking and backpacking. Many trails are open to horses. Difficulty ranges from easy to strenuous. High trails are usually under snow from late September through early July.
Mountain biking is allowed on trails outside of the wilderness area. Many trails are suitable for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during the long snow season. Fishing is another option here, and hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping and campfires are allowed freely throughout the National Forest, except where posted otherwise. No permits are required, but campers entering the Cloud Peak Wilderness should register at trailheads. Campsites should be at least 100 feet from trails and water sources.
