This sprawling book shop is a perfect place to spend an afternoon browsing. The organization here is chaotic or charming, depending on how you look at it: You’ll find books on shells next to those on dogs, while the movie section is right near the political science tomes. Even within a section, there’s quite a range Mine spotted an old, leather-bound copy of Walt Whitman’s poetry ($12.50) next to a hardback copy of The Bonfire of the Vanities (for $10, down from $20).

There are also kids’ books, mostly older storybooks, but the Choose Your Own Adventure series is here for $2 each. It’s worth noting, too, that Canterbury’s stocks foreign language books (from $2.50 for a paperback). In good weather, you can find extreme bargains on the 500 table outside the shop. Although almost all books here are secondhand, there is a small selection of new university press books. These are all 50% off their cover prices; most likely reviewers’ copies.
