496-502 Main St. (Rte. 62), Concord; (508) 369-9438
Explore the waters, woods, and wildlife of Concord that Thoreau and Emerson made famous. Even if you’re not a philosopher or writer, you’ll be inspired as you canoe from the boathouse down the Concord, Sudbury or Assabet Rivers. You can even glide under Old North Bridge, site of the Revolutionary War’s historic Shot heard round the world. There are lots of bucolic places to break for a picnic along the waterways. And the prices? Well, they’re pretty relaxing, too. Try to go during the week, when it’s just $7 an hour for a canoe that fits three; on Saturdays and Sundays the hourly rate is $8.25. Kayaks can be rented for the same prices. The boat house is open from April through October, beginning at 10 a.m. during the week; during the weekends, rentals start at 9 a.m.
