MEET TASMANIA’S ORIGINAL CRAFT QUEENS

We’re in the midst of an online craft revolution, with websites like etsy.com giving us access to gazillions of beautiful handmade creations from every corner of the globe. But nannas the world over have long known the secret joys of knitting, crocheting, baking and quilting, and we’d like to introduce you to some of Tassie’s finest. The Country Women’s Association (CWA) shop has been operating for over 60 years, with members providing a range of goods, from cakes and jams to crafty creations (including some outrageous cosies that’ll be the talk of your next tea party). Edible treats are all marked with CWA member numbers, so you can follow the baking habits of your favourite nanna or just take pot luck on whatever looks good. Around for a similar length of time, the much-loved Flower Room was originally set up to raise funds for the boys fighting overseas during WW II. Members of this non-profit community cooperative may be of a certain age, but they’re as up on the trend of creating and selling handmade goods as any Gen-Y, frankie-toting hipster. Here nothing goes to waste, and everything is top quality and well priced, from the fresh fruit and vegetables, to cakes, jams and a feast of flowers picked from members’ home gardens. Pop into the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) shop next door to discover a tiny craft cave packed full of handmade treasures, from adorable kiddies’ sailor suits and colourful, old-school crocheted blankets, to wacky toys guaranteed to make you giggle. The generous women who volunteer at these stores are Hobart’s original growers and craft queens. So put away your iPhone and experience some old-fashioned service with a smile.
