GREAT DESIGN, IN THE BAG
The Japanese have long had a love affair with Tasmania, but for Kiyomi of Sashiko Design, it was a love affair with a Tasmanian that led to her move to the great southern (is)land. After working as a fashion designer in her homeland, Kiyomi now produces a range of Tassie-made bags and accessories that combine contemporary Australian design with traditional Japanese craftsmanship – a winning mix indeed. So what’s in a name? Sashiko (or little daggers’) refers to a little-known stitching method that’s been used in Japan for centuries. It’s done completely by hand and the dotted-line effect is super strong and totally eye-catching. You can buy a framed swatch of sashiko-stitched fabric to hang on your wall, but it’s mostly about the bags here, made from materials like vintage kimono fabric, leather and denim From affordable everyday travellers to deluxe carriers, Kiyomi keeps her bag designs fresh by mixing things up and releasing new designs each season. And nothing goes to waste: eventiny scraps of kimono fabric are made into wallets, pouches and brooches. A visit to her studio reveals the process behind the product; pop your head in and watch Kiyomi hard at work at one of her vintage sewing machines, or catch up with her on Saturdays at Salamanca Market. And if you’re looking for something uniquely you, why not get something custom-made? You choose the fabric and style, and before you know it, it’s in the bag.
