The Goring London

A mere stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace and tucked away from the bustle of Victoria, The Goring is a rare treasure, for the hotel has been owned by the same family since it opened in 1910. It retains the feeling of a large, elegant private house, and every aspect of afternoon tea is intended to make it a relaxing occasion. So switch off your mobile, leave your laptop with the concierge and settle down in the cosy lounge, or in the sunny terrace overlooking the garden, and enjoy a feast fit for royalty in tranquil surroundings. Having chosen your tea from a very select list of leaf teas, including the Goring’s own blend, the proceedings begin with a complementary savoury starter, made to a favourite recipe of Elizabeth, the late Queen Mother. The tiered cake stand that follows has finger sandwiches with some unusual fillings and scrumptious scones, fruit and plain, served with clotted cream and jam. The staff are always on hand to replenish your cup, refresh your pot of tea, and bring more of whatever takes your fancy. The penultimate pastry course is a treat, with dainty cakes varied according to the season, and the whole event is finished off with an individual shot glass filled with the Goring’s tantalising trifle. If you happen to be visiting on a sunny summer afternoon, there is nowhere better to enjoy a truly traditional tea than seated at a table on the veranda, sipping Champagne, and enjoying the splendours of an English garden. But don’t forget to ask for a table in this coveted spot when you book!
