The de Saisset Museum, located adjacent to Mission Santa Clara de Asis in the heart of the Santa Clara University campus, is the Universitys museum of art and history. The Museums permanent collection contains a wide range of artworks in a variety of media. While the collection is rich in contemporary prints and photographs, it possesses historical old-world flavor with Renaissance pnnts. works by Albrecht Diirer. and the acclaimed sculpture “Othello” by 19th-century Italian artist Gian-Pietro Calvi. The Museum presents temporary exhibitions of contemporary and historically important art, ranging from local artists to touring national exhibits, often on ethical and moral themes. In addition, there are lectures, concerts, and films for the educational and cultural benefits of the University community, local residents, and visitors. The de Saisset Museum is also the caretaker of the Universitys California History Collection, which includes historical and ethnographic artifacts from the Native American period through the founding of the Mission and College. These are displayed in three galleries focusing on the Ohlone Indian, Mission, and early College periods. The Museum’s art collection includes paintings, prints, and sculptures by European and American artists from the 16th century to the present; European and Asian decorative art; and African tribal art. Among the many contemporary works m the collection is the largest public collection of the influential and historically important early 20th-century artist Henrietta Shore. In addition the collection contains works by Arnold G. Mountfort. Sam Francis. Bruce Conner, and many other artists of national and international renow n. Also of note are works from the Depression-era New Deal art program; film documentation of experimental performance art in the early 1970s; the Helen Johnston Collection of photographs by artists such as Ansel Adams. Ruth Bernhard, Wynn Bullock, Imogen Cunningham, •Judv Dater, Annie Leibovitz, Les Krims. Lisette Model, and Edward Weston; and archival prints from the Palo Alto fine arts press. Smith Andersen Editions, by Stanley Boxer, David Gilhooly, Joseph Goldyne, Frank Lob dell, Marguerite M. Saegesser, Inez Storer, and others. Wheelchair accessibility is limited to the galleries located on the main floor.

The Museum collects and exhibits contemporary and historical works with an emphasis on artists of the Greater Bay Area. The permanent collection includes Native American art and artifacts from the Southwest, California, and the Pacific Northwest. Exhibitions extend to include the art of the Pacific Rim. Europe, and beyond with the goal of creating diverse, thought-provoking exhibitions that reach beyond traditional presentations of art.
