The Contemporary Museum, located on a 3.5-acre sight in Honolulus scenic Makiki Heights, is a cultural oasis combining exhibitions of contemporary art with the natural beauty of Hawaii. Changing exhibitions are shown in the five galleries of the main building, the Contemporary Cafe, and at the museums downtown annex at First Hawaiian Center (see separate listing). Selections from the Museums permanent collection are shown periodically in the exhibition schedule. Holdings inciude over 1,200 works in all media from 1940 to the present by local, national, and international artists. Housed in a facility that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a state historic site, the Honolulu Academy of Arts is the states only general fine arts museum. It has an internationally recognized collection of Asian art, including the James A. Michener Collection of Ukiyo-e prints. The Academy also holds a Kress Collection of Italian Renaissance paintings, American and European paintings (including works by Picasso, Monet, Gauguin, and Cezanne) and decorative arts, contemporary art, and a collection of 17,000 works on paper. The collections are presented in thirty galleries surrounding six courtyards. The Academy also presents approximately ten temporary exhibitions per year.
