Bakersfield is located in the Central Valley of California, approximately 100 miles north of Los Angeles. -Alternatively, travelers can take exit 277 for State Route 99 and follow the signs west to I-5. Follow I-5 to State Route 162, which will bring you into Bakersfield from the northwest side of town. -From the east side of town, take exit 164 for Highway 166 or 166B (Devonshire Boulevard) and drive north to I-5. Follow I-5 west to State Route 152 (Palmdale Road). Turn right onto State Route 152 and drive northeast until it intersects with US 99 (Devonshire Street). Turn left onto US 99 and drive northwest until you reach the city limits of Bakersfield.
History of Bakersfield
Bakersfield, California, is a city located in Kern County at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley. It lies approximately 150 miles east of Los Angeles and about the same distance north of Fresno.
Bakersfield was founded in 1872 by John W. Baker as a stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad. The town grew rapidly as a result of its location near the railroad tracks and because the crops grown in the area – cotton, wheat and corn – were easily transported to markets. Bakersfield became an agricultural center for Kern County and continued to grow during the early 20th century as a result of increased production of fruits, vegetables and dairy products.
