The city of Altea, with a population of about 12,000 people, is the regional capital. The Altea region is located in the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas mountain range and its main economic activities are agriculture (livestock, olive oil production), tourism (especially for its thermal baths) and manufacturing (textiles, food processing).
