Cars have remained a persistent theme in contemporary art for artists exploring urban culture. Australian artist, Callum Morton’s Motormouth 2002 (Figure 3) explores the sonic themes of commuting. Rather than focusing on the car, the emphasis is on the social relations of driving, particularly road rage. Challenging the idea of driving as a non-social activity and dull experience, Morton’s installation work emphasizes the continual series of social interactions that are enacted through driving and being in a car.

HAMMERSKY VINEYARDS Built for a Mennonite minister and his family, the gleaming white house at HammerSky Vineyards dates to 1904. When Douglas Hauck and his wife, Kim, bought the fifty-acre property in 2007, they converted the colonial-style gem into a luxurious inn. Despite the home’s age, its crisp black shutters, second-floor balcony, and cropped boxwood hedge reveal a contemporary aesthetic. The couple oriented windows to incorporate views of a centuries-old valley oak, affectionately known as Uncle Dan, and erected a post-and-beam Yankee barn behind the house for winery events.
