336A Union Square, Somerville; (617) 628-4300 In these troubled economic times, most folks know what the term Chapter 11 means. Well, laying low at the 11th Chapter Saloon is a fine way to help anyone out of a fiscal crisis. This small but elegant-look-ing bar has great food and beers requiring little in the way of liquid assets.

From the red brick walls to the dark wooden bar, ceiling fans, and green-shaded lamps, this could be an insider’s hangout on Wall Street.

Tight quarters put the kitchen right behind the bar a flame grill that regularly flares up to add a little drama, and great smells, to the atmosphere. Burgers are thick half-pounders served on a bulkie roll with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and fries for $4.50. They serve lunch here too, when you can get combination specials like a half-sandwich and soup for $3, or some chili and a small salad for $3.25.

The real bargains here, though, are the entrees, served until 11 p.m. Steak tips ($6) and pork chops ($6.50) are thick and juicy cuts of meat, flame-grilled in a lip-smacking marinade, served with fries, plus lettuce and carrot sticks. A blackboard of daily specials may add grilled striped marlin for $6.25.

The fine selection of beers includes Anchor Steam, Foster’s Lager, and New Amsterdam Ale. On Thursdays through Saturdays, the 11th Chapter presents local bands; the bookings lean toward rhythm and blues. Space is scarce, yeah, but…hey, there’s no cover charge.

See? Life is good, even if you are bankrupt. Open daily.
