BLACK RIVER STATE FOREST

65,000 acres. This state forest in west-central Wisconsin includes some sandstone ridges and bluffs, along with a number of lakes, ponds, and streams. There are forests of pine, oak, and aspen, with deer among the wildlife. As in other state forests, logging takes place in some areas.

Activities: Canoeing is available on the Black River during spring and early summer. There are 27 miles of cross-country ski trails which are groomed during the winter, and also about 20 miles of horse trails.

The forest has no designated hiking or backpacking trails. Foot-travelers may use cross-country ski trails and other paths or roads. Fishing is possible, with hunting allowed in season.

Cam ping Regulations: A permit is required in order to camp in the forest, and may be obtained by mail or in person from the state forest office. Campfires are allowed. Some canoe campsites are available on an island in the Black River. There’s also a small horse campground.
