Dinner at the Mitton House

Here’s an unusual opportunity for a truly special meal. At Newbury College’s culinary arts school, tucked way up in the fancy hills of Brookline near Chestnut Hill, students learn gourmet cooking techniques which will land them in many of the area’s finer restaurants. For a fraction of what those places charge, you can dine here in a private mansion, no less.
The setting is the George Mitton House, the nineteenth-century home of the founder of Jordan Marsh. Lunches and dinners are served on weekdays through the school year, with entrees such as lobster thermi-dor, medallions of veal princess, and cuisines from around the world. Meals are complete, from appetizer through dessert, for one price; and everything is superbly made to order in their kitchens, including the delicate garde manger sculptures carved from fruits and vegetables.
Reservations must be made and paid for in advance; dinners cost $20 complete, lunches $10, and you can charge over the phone. With a capacity of only thirty-five to forty people, the tables get booked up well in advance. No alcohol is served, but you may bring your own wine. The service is excellent. Lunch is served Mondays through Thursdays, and Saturdays, at noon; dinner is served Mondays through Thursdays at 6 P.M.
