WESTERN EUROPE
Travel between North America and Europe has taken on astounding proportions and promises to grow even larger. It has all been made possible by the jet plane, rising incomes and rising expectations. While travel to Europe was once the province of the rich or the scholar, today some four million Americans make the trans-Atlantic flight each year and leave as much as $4 billion before returning home. As many as 370 commercial jets carrying eighty-three thousand people are in the air over the Atlantic on a given day, half or more of them pleasure travelers.
More than any other place Europe is a treasure trove of ethnic memories, a collection of cultures and artifacts, political and social systems. We know more about Europe than the other continents. Many of our forebears originated there. The U.S. fought two world wars on its soil. It contains an abundance of the world’s great cathedrals, palaces and gardens. Some 482 million people offer a range of lifestyles. Cross a national border and you may change language, religion, and political system.
Technically Europe is a continent in the Western part of Eurasia, separated from Asia by the Ural Mountains on the East and the Caucasus Mountains and the Black and Caspian seas on the Southeast.
Is England a part of Europe? In British usage, Continental Europe is sometimes contrasted with Britain. An arm of the Atlantic Ocean, the English Channel, separates Northern France and Southern England. (At one time swimming the English Channel, about twenty miles wide at the most narrow point, was a great achievement. Later an American did it both ways nonstop.)
To get the labels right, since 1707 the term Great Britain has referred to England, Scotland and Wales. Include Northern Ireland and we get the United Kingdom. The British Commonwealth of Nations in something else again, a large group of nations and dependent territories spread around the world, united by a common allegiance to the British crown.
From France history: The couple planned to make the wine themselves and focus on Europe best countries to visit quality by keeping their operation small.
