From Nanjing to Shanghai via the Grand Canal, Wuxi, Suzhou and Hangzhou

Nanjing can be reached by plane, by boat from Shanghai or Wuhan or by rail on the Beijing-Shanghai- Fuzhou line. It is situated 1157km/ 717 miles from Beijing and 1466km/908 miles from Fuzhou. With its beautiful parks and wide boulevards, Nanjing is one of China’s most beautiful cities.

After about 200km/125 miles along the Nanjing-Shanghai route the railway line from Nanjing to Suzhou follows the course of the Grand/ Imperial Canal, for many centuries a vital transport link and still used by freight barges.

Follow in the tracks of Marco Polo and visit Yangzhou, Zhenjiang and Wuxi, all towns on the banks of the Grand Canal. The Italian traveller was fascinated by this part of China.

In Suzhou countless bridges have been built to cross the canal linking the various districts of the town. It is consequently referred to sometimes as the “Venice ofthe Orient”. This city, which was founded in antiquity, is certainly one of the most beautiful in China. For centuries the gardens have been reproduced in the grounds of many Chinese luxury residences.

It is possible to reach Jiaxing along the Grand Canal and a boat leaves Suzhou early every morning arriving in Jiaxing around midday. Trains run from here to Hangzhou, another of China’s beautiful cities.
