The Chumash Trail Is Located In Rocky Peak Park In The Santa Susana Mountains East Of Simi Valley. This Trail Ascends The West Flank Of Rocky Peak, Winding Up The Chaparral-Cloaked Mountainside To The Ridge North Of The Peak. En Route, The Trail Passes Sculpted Sandstone Outcroppings, Caves, And A Series Of Scenic Overlooks And Highland Meadows. From Hamilton Saddle And The Rocky Peak Trail Junction Are Panoramic Views Of The Simi Hills, Simi Valley, San Fernando Valley, The Santa Susana Mountains, The Santa Monica Mountains, Blind Canyon, And Las Llajas Canyon.
To The Trailhead
From Highway 118/Ronald Reagan Freeway In Simi Valley, Exit On Yosemite Avenue. Drive 0.4 Miles North To Flanagan Drive And Turn Right. Continue 0.8 Miles To The Trailhead At The End Of The Road.
The Hike
Head North Past The Kiosk Along The Rolling Hills And Grassy Meadows. The Trail Climbs Steadily As You Round The Hillside To The First Overlook Of Simi Hills To The South. Continue Uphill Through Coastal Sage Scrub, Curving Left Around The Next Rolling Hill And Passing Sculpted Sandstone Formations. Arrow Signposts Are Placed Along The Route. Continue To The East Along The Edge Of The Canyon To Hamilton Saddle. From The Saddle, The Trail Sharply Curves Left (North), Gaining Elevation Before Leveling Out Again At Flat Rock. From Flat Rock, Begin The Final Ascent Through Chaparral, Curving Around The Last Ridge To The Top. The Trail Ends At A Junction With The Rocky Peak Trail At An Elevation Of 2,450 Feet. Sixty Yards To The Left Of The Junction Are Views Of Blind Canyon And Las Llajas Canyon. Reverse Your Route To Return.
For A Longer Hike, The Rocky Peak Trail Continues 1.3 Miles Southeast To The Summit Of Rocky Peak (Hike 150).
