A mainstay of the neighborhood, Center of the Earth was making its mark long before NoDa was
known as The Arts District. The gallery opened in 1985 and was the first gallery in the neighborhood (and was later recognized with a Governor’s Award for Businesses in the Arts for its impact on the city). Over the past two and a half decades, it’s become a leading gallery for contemporary art in the Southeast. It’s the place that Bank of America, The Federal Reserve Bank, Hearst Corporation, and Philip Morris USA go to find art for their corporate buildings. The renowned artists that exhibit here also routinely attract the attention of collectors. The work of emerging artists is sometimes displayed here; in keeping with the rest of the work in the gallery, the prices are more reflective of established artists than relative newcomers.
Nicholas de Ovando arrives and establishes royal control over Hispaniola. Gold supplies are soon exhausted, and most of the settlers move to Hispaniola, Cuba, or Panama. 1509 Juan de Esquivel leads an expedition to Jamaica, where no gold is found. Within a few years, the island’s natives are dead or serving Spanish masters in other parts of the New World. Most of the Spanish colonists leave.
