The chicks will often wander around the colony when they are hungry and are sometimes temporarily adopted by other birds while their mother is away looking for food. When a chick squeaks and cries because it has been orphaned or it is cold or hungry, another bird will usually adopt it as its own. They very often even pirate the egg of another razorbill and guillemot of the same species and adopt that as their own. The razorbill dives to similar depths as the guillemot and can carry up to seven or eight fish, usually holding them across the bill. Puffin (Fratercula artica) The puffin is often referred to as a ‘sea parrot’ but its local name is the ‘tommie noddie’. It nests on all of the islands which earth deep enough to build a burrow. There are about 3,000 pairs nesting on the bigger islands of Farne, Brownsman, Staple and the Wideopens. They are a strange-looking bird: thickset and squat, they stand upright and are about twelve inches (30 cm) high. Their legs and feet are bright orange, while the massive coloured bill is striped with grey-blue scarlet and yellow. During flight, which is usually more or less in a straight line, the short wings flap so fast they remind you of the hummingbird, but like the other members of the auk family, the wings are designed mainly for swimming underwater.
