If there’s a performance in Uptown, chances are good it’s at the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Construction on the center got underway in the 1980s after the Belk Brothers Company donated land and funding was secured through the State of North Carolina, a bond referendum approved by the citizens of Charlotte, and individual, corporate, and foundation grants totaling more than $32 million were secured. Architect Cesar Pelli designed the center, which opened in 1992 after three years of construction. The Blumenthal houses 10 arts organizations, including Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera Carolina, Carolina Voices, and Carolina Concert Association. There are three performance spaces: the 2,100-seat Belk Theater, the 434-seat Booth

Playhouse, and the 150-seat Stage Door Theater. The annual Broadway Lights series is held in the Belk Theater. The Blumenthal has launched some innovative programs to expand the reach of the theater: CLUB BLUME entices twenty- and thirtysomething theatergoers with discounted tickets, preshow mixers, reserved seating with other members, and special events. Out on the Town is a similar program that’s billed as a gay and lesbian social club.
