Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay

Come visit during the new moon and get that ethereal, almost out-of-this-world glowing experience at the Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay. Located at Vieques Island, the Mosquito Bay is just one of the few luminescent bays existing in the world, and this one is deemed to be the brightest. On a dark night, the bay can cast a neon g glow. This phenomenon is caused by organisms called dinoflagellates, that when agitated emits a neon glow and spreads it to anything they touch: water, boat and even humans. It is a rather magical and enchanting experience and it shouldn’t be missed if you’re in Vieques Island.

The dinoflagellates are living in a delicate environment and tourists need to be aware of the laws to help protect the bay for many years to come. Kayaking is the best way to arrive at the bay since it doesn’t distract the dinos as compared to using motorized boats. Swimming, using of sunscreen and insect repellants are also not allowed while at the bay. To make the most of the experience, pick a new moon date and schedule a tour of the Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay with professional guides.
