The Florence Griswold Museum is housed in a late Georgian-style mansion designed by Samuel Belcher and built in 1817. The building contains period rooms and is surrounded by gardens restored to their appearance when the house was occupied by Florence Griswold around 1900. The Museum’s holdings include over 900 works by approximately 130 American artists, many of whom were members of the art colony at Old Lyme, either as part of the “American Barbizon” movement or as Impressionists, such as Ebert, Chadwick, Hassam, and Metcalf.
