CAMPING. Although there are no campsites in New York City itself, you’ll find a few on Long Island (such as Hither Hills at Montauk) and in the Hudson River Valley.
A comprehensive booklet on camping in New York State can be obtained from the New York Department of Commerce. Division of Tourism, 99 Washington Avenue, Albany, New York 12245, or call (800) 342-3810 (no charge). Rates run from $3.50 to $4.50 daily for a tent site in state-operated grounds. Most campgrounds in New York State open in May and close in September or October. Remember to make reservations during July and August.
