Where and When to Shop

As a general rule, stores are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Mondays to Saturdays. Many shops and department stores open at least one night a week, usually Thursdays. It’s a good idea to avoid the noon-hour rush and Saturdays if you suffer from crowdophobia. Some stores now open Sunday afternoons.

Department stores exist in many shapes and sizes. Starting off with the most interesting: Bloomingdale’s (Lexingtonand 59th Street) is almost a city in itself. A store you absolutely must visit for the most up-to-the-minute clothing, furniture (see their model rooms), accessories, housewares and fine gourmet shop. In fact, just about everything. Macy’s (34th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues), known as the world’s largest, does sell everything! Most recent addition, the bright and cheery.
