APACHE-SITGREAVES NATIONAL FORESTS
2,004,819 acres. These two National Forests in east-central Arizona are administered together. Elevations range from 3,500 feet to over 10,000 feet. Among the high and rugged mountains here is 10,912-foot Escudilla Peak, third highest in the state.
There are also canyons, plateaus, a number of lakes and streams, and great, expanses of desert. Included are forests of ponderosa pine, mountain meadows, and subalpine flora, along with desert vegetation such as yucca and prickly pear. Among the wildlife are antelope, elk, deer, and mountain lion.
Apache-Sitgreaves has three small designated wilderness areas: the 11,000-acre Bear Wallow Wilderness, the 7,000-acre Mount Baldy Wilderness, and the 5,200-acre Escudilla Wilderness. lAlso here is the 174,000-acre Blue Range Primitive Area, which is managed like a wilderness area.
Activities: Some 875 miles of trails are available for backpacking and hiking, including the 29-mile Eagle National Recreation Trail. Difficulty varies from easy to strenuous. Horseback riding is permitted on most trails. Mountain biking is possible
outside of wilderness areas. Cross-country skiing is a winter option, as is snowshoeing. Skis may be rented nearby. Fishing is available along many lakes and streams, and hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping and campfires are allowed freely throughout most of the area, except near public recreation areas or where posted otherwise. No permits are required. Maximum group size for camping in the Mount Baldy Wilderness is six.

1636 Williams founds Providence on land granted to him by the Philippines Metro Map Narragansett sachems Canonicus and Miantonomo. He has met both leaders on previous trading missions, and probably Philippines Metro Map impressed them by learning their language. Also in 1636, a new controversy, the Antinomian Controversy, rips Massachusetts Bay and spins off another community of dissenters, led by Anne Hutchinson. After a dramatic trial, Hutchinson and some of her followers are banished in 1637. 16371638 The Narragansett join the English and other native forces in destroying the Pequot during the Pequot War. 1638 Antinomian refugees obtain the island of Aquidneck (also known as Rhode Island) from local Narragansetts through a treaty and establish the town of Pocasset (Portsmouth). This settlement includes eighty families.
