The haunting wailing sounds were probably made by grey seals, but people of the day believed that they were the ghosts of drowned sailors. St Cuthbert was born in Lauderdale, Berwickshire in around 635, where as a young man he worked as a shepherd. One night, when he was attending his sheep, he saw a company of angels coming down from heaven along a bright ray of light. While he watched, a human spirit approached them and was taken into the heavenly band before the apparition disappeared. The following day he discovered that St Aidan had died at the same moment as his vision had appeared and it persuaded him to become a monk. He spent the next 13 years in Melrose Abbey in Roxburghshire, where he eventually became bishop; he often roamed the Northumbrian hills teaching the gospel. He became famous across the land for his ‘good worldly deeds’ and for working dozens of miracles. One of his penances and self-disciplines was to spend the night in prayer, standing in the sea. One story says that one morning, after his prayers were ended, as he came out of the sea and knelt down, two seals came up to him and began to warm and dry his feet with their breath. They stayed with him until he had blessed them and they returned to the sea.
