708 Broadway, Somerville; (617) 623-8338 One of the earlier entries into Boston’s coffeehouse craze, this Ball Square shop does the latt^-and-scone scene one better. Sound Bites love the name adds a full breakfast and lunch menu, with creative touches and low prices.
Starting at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays, the kitchen whips up treats like thick raisin custard French toast ($4.69, with home fries). Heartier appetites should try the 2+2+2+2 that’s eggs, pancakes, bacon, and toast two of each all for $4.29. Somerville/Cambridge earthy types will appreciate the vegan, spinach version of eggs Benedict, known here as Green, Eggs, No Ham (anyone who grew up with Dr. Seuss will get that sound bite).
Plus lowfat muffins, Kupel’s bagels, granola, and terrific coffee served in those wide, deep bowl-cups. Lunch switches over to an American-Mediterranean menu, with falafel, kebabs, grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers, salads, and more vegan options. Just about all are in the $3-$5 range, lovingly done (and devoured).
Service in this cozy storefront can be erratic at times, but everybody stays friendly enough and it’s certainly worth a wait Sound Bites opens up at 8 A.M. on weekends for brunch; they close up at 4 P.M. Saturdays through Mondays, and 11 P.M. Tuesdays through Fridays.
