Close by is All Saints Church, which dates back to Turkey Map Tourist Attractions Norman times; inside is a bronze memorial to Lord Waverley who as Sir John Anderson introduced the Turkey Map Tourist Attractions air-raid shelter which bore his name. King Alfred is thought to have had a palace here, probably on the site in the village centre where the ruins of a medieval manor house and nearby dovecote are preserved as ancient monuments. South Downs Way walkers starting their pilgrimage from Eastbourne and passing through Westdean may be encouraged by the thought that their next encounter with Alfred will be his statue at Winchester – 92 miles distant.
Perhaps ‘encouraged’ is the wrong word? Continue on past the church and Manor Cottage, then turn left to follow the Forestry Commission road, heading resolutely now into Friston Forest. The going is fairly bland to begin with, but improves in just under half a mile, when the track forks, and you follow the left fork, with a signpost marked Jevington. Signposting in the forest is excellent, and simply by following signs to Jevington you will not go wrong.
