If Suarez is reminiscent of an old-style bakery, it shouldn’t be a surprise. This locally owned business has been serving cakes, donuts, and other sweet treats since the 1950s. An assortment of breads, pastries, and cakes are displayed in glass cases and indecisive customers are encouraged to request samples. Most of the sweet treats are taken to go (in traditional cardboard bakery boxes), but there is a small eat-in area if you want to linger with your eclair. The bakery specializes in special-order desserts like wedding and birthday cakes. Ask the staff to help you choose a flavor and a design from their extensive offerings.

A hidden gem tucked away in the back of the Foxcroft Village Shopping Center, Barrington’s has been named one of the top restaurants in the country. Those who have discovered it keep coming back thanks to chef-owner Bruce Moffett’s creations like the handmade parmesan gnocchi with veal and porcini mushrooms or the herbrubbed lamb chops. The restaurant was named for Moffett’s childhood home of Barrington, Rhode Island, and there are also plenty of Northeast offerings on the menu Maine crabs and ropegrown Prince Edward Island mussels. Changed seasonally, Barrington’s menu also features local and organic items. Although Barrington’s attracts its share of local celebrities, this bistro-type restaurant is not pretentious. It seats just 45 people, so reservations are essential.

Both the decor and menu are casual at Harper’s, which opened its doors in 1987. But calling Harper’s casual might be a little deceiving. Exposed brick walls and stone floors do create an informal atmosphere, and ample burgers and wood-fired pizzas are conventional American fare. Harper’s ups the ante with touches like gluten-free items, a variety of nice wines, daily made-from-scratch soups, and several entrees that would show up in fine-dining restaurants, making it a favorite for locals.
