I first began writing letters to the diving magazines in the mid-1970s and progressed to writing monthly articles for Underwater World and Sub-Aqua Scene, for which I was even presented with the ‘Golden Writer of the Year’ award at the London Boat Show. Then, after doing a series for Sub-Aqua Scene about diving around the Farnes, I was deluged with letters from people asking for more information. Unfortunately, the magazine had left out some of the numbered maps, or printed them so small that they were unreadable. After that, I was continually asked to share our knowledge of the diving sites around the Farne Islands but it was at that time an impossible task as I only used an ordinary typewriter. The word processor bought for me by my wife Rose for Christmas 1997 solved those problems and now, of course, I use a computer. My diving days are now long gone, my health may be failing, but at 73 my memories and dreams of the world beneath the waves are as vivid as ever. Unlike many divers’ guide blogs, where the information on divesites has been acquired from second-hand sources, every numbered site in this blog (with the exception of the deep wrecks and their positions, which came courtesy of the UK Hydrographic office and Meridian Chartware at Norwich) has been personally dived by the author. The information should therefore be accurate, unless the site has been altered in some way by the elements. The blog, first written on a font writer and published by me in 1998, is an honest and truthful account of my years spent diving around the Farnes. I know that diving solo is a very controversial issue, leaving my buddy and me open to criticism from certain quarters, and that some club divers may even be appalled at the very idea.
