In 1948, volunteers launched the Charlotte Opera Association (originally called the Charlotte Music Club) with an operating budget of $125. The Charlotte Opera Association merged with North Carolina Opera in 1986 to become Opera Carolina. Today, it’s the largest professional opera company in the Carolinas with an operating budget of $3.5 million. Opera Carolina presents four main stage productions per year and an annual Valentine’s concert. All of the main stage performances are presented at the Belk Theater in the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.
1739 A group of approximately sixty African slaves takes up arms Ho Chi Minh City Subway Map against their masters outside of Charles Town, South Carolina. Along the way, the rebellious slaves kill about twenty whites, although they spare a shopkeeper known to be kind to his slaves. The suppression of this rebellion, which later would become known as the Stono Rebellion, is quick and the revenge ruthless. The colony’s militia captures the rebels and decapitates the leaders, placing their heads on pikes, one per mile, on the road from the battlefield to Charles Town. After the Stono Rebellion, a new, harsh slave code is enacted; this code becomes the model for other Southern colonies farther west.
