Even with its immensity, the determined traveler can fly direct from Miami to either Belem, at the mouth of the Amazon River, or to Manaus, the unofficial capital of the region, about half way up the river. Santarem, about a fourth of the way up the river, and Iquitos, Peru, are also served by air. At the headwaters of the Amazon, Brazil shares the river with Peru and Colombia.
