C SHOESHINES. There are plenty of shoe repair shops where you can get your shoes polished. Prices are always displayed and run about 75 cents for shoes and from SI.25 up for boots. A 50-cent tip is usual.
SUBWAY. This comprehensive underground network is the fastest means of transport in New York. Trains run 24 hours a day, and the subway is quite safe until after midnight. Maps of the network are posted in every station and in every train.
However, it’s not easy to use the subway: you’ll need two or three days to master the subtleties of the system. Don’t hesitate to ask a passerby or a policeman for help. Look carefully before you enter to be sure you’re going in the right direction: Downtown means south and lower street numbers; Uptown is north, with higher street numbers. Most subway lines run north-south: to go crosstown take the shuttle train from Times Square to Grand Central.
