ROGUE RIVER NATIONAL FOREST
This National Forest consists of two tracts in southwest Oregon, one alongside Crater Lake National Park and the other next to the California border, and extending into that state. There are some prominent peaks, with 9,495-foot Mount McLoughlin the highest point, plus cirque basins, deep gorges and steep cliffs, rock formations and massive lava flows.
The beautiful Rogue River is here, along with many lakes, creeks, and waterfalls, including 600-foot Alkali Falls. The area has mixed conifer forests and deciduous trees, with old-growth Douglas fir, pine, and hemlock. Among the wildlife are elk, mule deer, black bear, mountain lion, and bobcat.
There are three designated wilderness areas, consisting of portions of the 116,300-acre Sky Lakes Wilderness, the 33,200-acre Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness, and the 20,234-acre Red Buttes Wilderness.
Activities: Backpacking and hiking are possible on more than 400 miles trails, easy to strenuous
in difficulty. Included are a section of the Pacific Crest Trail (see entry page 244) and the 48-mile Upper Rogue River Trail. High trails are likely be snow-free only from mid-July through September.
Horseback riding is allowed on many trails. Cross-country skiing is available when there’s snow. Fishing is also possible. Hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed throughout the National Forest, as are campfires, except near public use areas or where otherwise prohibited. No permits are necessary.
