WILLAPA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
11,000 acres. This National Wildlife Refuge in southwest Washington preserves the land and wildlife around Willapa Bay, and includes 5,000-acre Long Island. Access to the island is by private boat.
There are ocean beaches and sand dunes, grassy areas with shrubs, salt marshes, and some coastal forest with a 274-acre stand of old-growth western red cedar. Among the wildlife here are elk, deer, bear, marine animals, plus a diverse birdlife.
Activities: The refuge is open to foot travel only. There are just a few short trails, along with some
gravel roads which are closed to vehicles. Limited hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping and campfires are restricted to five primitive campgrounds along the shore of Long Island. These may be reached by boat. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Primitive camping is also allowed in most of Washington’s State Wildlife Areas. Primary use of these areas is for hunting and fishing, but hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding are also permitted. There are no established trails. Campfires are prohibited during the dry season. Camping policy is subject to possible change in the near future.
