GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK
310,520 acres. Surrounded by National Forest lands, spectacular Grand Teton National Park is located directly south of Yellowstone National Park, in northwest Wyoming.
This wilderness park centers around the magnificent Tetons, high and jagged mountains which rise precipitously from the plain of Jackson Hole. Highest is 13,770-foot Grand Teton, and eight other peaks are over 12,000 feet.
There are also steep canyons, high alpine meadows, forests of spruce, pine, and fir, some lovely lakes, plus a stretch of the Snake River. Wildlife includes grizzly and black bear, bighorn sheep, elk, pronghorn antelope, moose, and mule deer.
Activities: Hiking and backpacking are possible on over 200 miles of trails. Difficulty varies from easy to very strenuous. High trails are usually only snow-free from late July through September.
Horseback riding is allowed on most but not all trails. Rafting, kayaking, and canoeing are available by permit on a section of the Snake River. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are winter ‘options here. Bikes are not permitted on trails.
Mountaineering is possible in the park by permit. Fishing is available on the lakes and rivers. Contrary to the policy in most National Parks, hunting is allowed here in season.
Camping Regulations: A free permit is necessary in order to camp in the backcountry, and may be obtained from a visitor center or ranger station. A limited number of permits are issued up to several months in advance, and the remainder are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
There are designated sites at some of the lakes, and camping is also allowed within several camping zones. When at other than established sites, it’s necessary to camp at least 100 feet from water sources, and out of sight of trails and other campers.
Campfires are not permitted except at some lakeshore campsites. Pets are prohibited. Maximum group size is 12, and groups must use designated group sites.
