Directions: Exit Edmonton on either Hwy 16 or 16A west, take the Hwy 30 (Range Road 35) exit, and turn left onto Hwy 30 south.

Wabamun Lake was originally known as White Whale Lake because of its large whitefish. In 1906 the name was changed to Wabamun, which is Cree for looking glass. Established in 1955, Wabamun Lake Provincial Park is a choice destination for people interested in picnicking, hiking, swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing, boating, water-skiing, windsurfing, and fishing.
In the park’s day-use area, the beach is near picnic sites and horseshoe pits, as well as a baseball diamond and soccer field. Two boat launches are available, including a paved ramp for trailers and a hand-launch site for Jet Skis and sailboards. From the beach, you can hike along Moonlight Bay, where interpretive signs identify park plants and animals.
In 1868, Moonlight Bay was the site of the White Whale Stopping House, where as many as 30 tired travellers could spend the night and shelter their horses. The upstairs sleeping area was a large room with many bunks and no privacy. The stopping house closed in about 1912 when the railway changed how people travelled.
Today, visitors to Wabamun Lake are likely to notice the Sundance Power Plant located across the lake. Coal is abundant in the Wabamun area, and the Sundance plant is western Canada’s largest coal-fired electrical generating facility. Interpretive signs in the park explain how electricity is produced and address environmental concerns. The Sundance plant’s thermal output makes Wabamun the only Alberta lake where you can fish in open water throughout the year. Boaters can use the lake for about two extra months each year.
Wintertime at Wabamun means the chance to enjoy a lit ice-skating area, as well as six kilometres of beginner-level ski trails along Moonlight Bay. A heated shelter is located at the trailhead.
