Internationally recognized architects Eliel Saarinen, I.M. Pei, and Richard Meier have created three distinctive buildings as part of the complex. The Des Moines Art Centers reputation has been established through collecting 20th-century art with emphasis now placed on acquiring works by living American and European artists. More than 3,500 works are in the permanent collection; among the over 1,600 artists represented are Francis Bacon, Constantine Brancusi, Mary Cassatt, Jean Dubuffet, Francisco Goya, Jasper Johns, Donald Judd, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Henry Moore, Georgia OKeeffe, Claes Oldenburg, Auguste Rodin, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol. There is also a collection of African art. In addition to displaying works from its permanent collection, the Art Center brings in special art exhibitions from around the United States and abroad.
