But it’s a key player at Kamalaya, where it has been incorporated into the resort’s new Structural Revival Program, an in-depth wellness experience that was created by the resort’s co-founder, Karina Stewart, to address pain and a lack of mobility. “Over the years, we became aware that a growing number of our guests were experiencing pain and discomfort due to physical misalignment,” says Stewart, who’s also a master of traditional Chinese medicine. “We created the Structural Revival Program to help address this.”

The five-, seven- and nine-night program includes Pilates in a dedicated studio that houses Merrithew™ Reformers, Towers and a Chair and Ladder Barrel. “We also run mat classes and utilize small equipment, and have an in-house team of experienced Pilates instructors with a variety of training backgrounds, including STOTT® and BASI,” Stewart says. The program also includes specially designed “Revival Exercises” that are guided by physical therapists, as well as myofascial release, assisted stretching and massages to realign the body, rehab injuries and relieve tension and pain. “Pilates integrates physical postures, breath and awareness; it’s a practice that really connects us to the present moment so that all aspects of your life work in harmony,” she continues.

“It can be transformative from a holistic perspective, and reflects Kamalaya’s holistic approach to wellness beautifully.” The stunning resort, surrounded by soaring cliffs and lush vegetation on the island of Koh Samui off the Thai coast, has long been a sanctuary for mindfulness and healing: The property is the site of an ancient cave that once served as a meditation and spiritual retreat for Buddhist monks.

This Structural Revival Program is complemented by therapeutic treatments at Kamalaya’s Holistic Spa, such as traditional Thai massage, Taoist abdominal massage and lotus seed scrub and wrap. Kamalaya’s healthy but delicious cuisine was also designed to reduce inflammation and promote health. For more information, go to kamalaya.com. —Anne Marie O’Connor.
