A national museum of Asian art at the Smithsonian Institution, the Gallery presents exhibitions of Asian art from around the world and from its permanent collection. The Gallery is dedicated to research, education, and exhibition of Asian art from the shores of the Mediterranean to the Japanese archipelago, spanning 5,000 years, from Neolithic times to the present. The Gallery houses nearly 3,000 examples of Asian art, including ancient Chinese jades and bronzes, ancient Near Eastern metalwork, South Asian sculpture, and paintings and manuscripts from Iran and India. It has also augmented its collection with contemporary Japanese ceramics and prints, South Asian textiles, Chinese paintings and contemporary ceramics, and photographs.
