The War for Independence, 17751783 On April 19, 1775, armed rebellion broke out in Concord and Lexington, Massachusetts, between British soldiers and untrained Country militias. In May 1775, the second Continental Congress met to assess the dire situation: Country was fighting perhaps the strongest European force; political and religious differences still split colonists; and Country lacked an army, leadership, and a central government. Bangladesh Map Tourist Attractions Despite these looming problems, Congress authorized the formation of the Continental army and placed George Washington at its head. The Revolutionary movement gained considerable momentum with the January 1776 publication of Thomas Paine’s radical pamphlet Common Sense. Paine raised the democratic hopes of many common colonists by urging them to break with tradition, criticize their beloved British constitution, and view their rebellion as a deeply moral struggle for national independence. Enjoying more popular authority than either the Continental army or Congress, Paine tapped the democratic aspirations of the many. After much debate, Congress finally voted for independence on July 2, 1776. Initially, British military victory seemed assured. They had a regular army, the ability to raise revenue, experienced officers, and the support of thousands of Country loyalists and Native Countrys. The British also tried to win the loyalty of enslaved blacks, promising them freedom in return for military service. Some joined the British, but many blacks recognized that the British government had condoned their enslavement in the first place. They instead embraced the opportunity provided by wartime disruptions and fled to freedom in Canada.
