MILES DESCRIPTION

0.0 The south loop of the Sturgeon River Trail begins on the south side of County Road 65 opposite the parking area. The trail crosses a small bridge about 60 feet from the road.

0.1 Trail intersection; turn right passing the trail to the left.

1.2 Pass an unmarked trail on the left.

1.4 Trail intersection beginning the circuit portion of this hike; turn right and cross the bridge over the East Branch of the Sturgeon River, passing the trail continuing straight ahead on the east side of the river. After crossing the bridge, the trail follows the river downstream for about 100 yards before moving away from the river and ascending a ridge.

1.8 Trail intersection; cross an unmarked trail going left and right.

2.4 Trail intersection with road; turn left and follow the road.

2.7 Road intersection; bear right passing the road which continues straight ahead.

2.8 Road intersection; bear left at fork in the road.

3.0 Road turns right, passing a grassy trail on the left.

3.4 Trail intersection; turn left off the road onto the trail just before the road exits the red pine plantation.

3.6 Cross a bridge over a small stream.

3.9 Trail intersection; turn left passing the trail straight ahead leading to County Road 279.

4.0 Bridge crossing the East Branch of the Sturgeon River. From here the trail turns north along the east side of the river.

4.4 The trail bears right away from the river by ascending a short bank to a shrubby field. Across this field the trail takes a bearing of about 50° heading for a mature forest.

4.6 Trail intersection; turn left passing the trail continuing straight ahead.

4.8 Cross a stream.

6.7 Bridge over small stream. In about 200 feet reach the trail

intersection at the first bridge crossing the East Branch of the Sturgeon River completing the circuit portion of this hike. Continue straight ahead to return to the trailhead.

6.9 Trail intersection; continue straight ahead and enter jack pine forest, passing the trail on the right.

7.9 Trail intersection; turn left passing the trail which continues straight ahead.

8.1 Reach the trailhead on County Road 65.
