THE BIRD’S NEST, TREEHOTEL SWEDEN
IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOR YOUR HONEYMOON
you need look no further than this extraordinarily designed ‘bird’s nest’. Made from birch twigs woven in an authentically untidy fashion around a circle of wood to resemble a nest, it’s perched several metres high in a pine forest in Swedish Lapland. Press a button in one of the tree trunks which hold up the room and a trap door swings open with metal stairs extending down to welcome you. OK, so you can’t be carried over the threshold, but you won’t be disappointed by the setting. Tucked into the ‘nest’ is a double bed, a flickering fire in the wall, an eco-friendly water system and tiny round windows looking out onto the trees.

There are even twin bunk beds curved into the wall, if this is a family affair. Outside, the Northern Lights might just dance over in hues of yellow and green, adding to the thrill of the location. Walk through the crisp snow to the main house for dinners of moose, reindeer or Arctic char and a shot of owner Kent’s homemade birch vodka by the log fire. Wake up to the silence of a snow-clad forest before heading out to ice fish, dog sled or visit the Sámi people (Lapland’s original inhabitants) and their herds of reindeer.
