9 West St. Boston; (617) 542-0210 One of Boston’s most venerable book shops, the Brattle is right out of an old movie every comer is crammed, with over 250,000 used, rare, and out-of-print books. It’s a wonderful place to browse. There’s plenty of history, politics, and fiction, but also some harder-to-find subjects like New England and nautical books.

Most hardcovers seem to be priced at $7.50. Titles espied at this bargain rate included Truman Capote’s Answered Prayers and The Final Days by Woodward and Bernstein. Mine also found Harry S. Truman, by daughter Margaret, in hardcover for $10 and in paperback for $4.50.

Brattle’s half-off tables, inside and outside the store, yield more amazing bargains. BBS also has old magazines, including a huge selection of Life from its heyday decades. They are fun to look at, lining the staircase and suspended from the ceilings. Brattle is open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
