Welcome to the platinum behind the scenes tour here at the California Academy of Sciences. My name is Christina, and for the next couple of hours I’ll be showing you around behind the scenes. We were founded back in 1853 and it was quite a journey getting back here to Golden Gate Park, where we re-opened just one year ago. Along the way I’ll be showing you some exclusive areas of our facility, including a living roof, a gem vault, and a project lab where we process a lot of the specimens to get added to our collection.
California Academy of Sciences Platinum Behind the Scenes Tour, San Francisco Photo Gallery
Welcome to our living roof, designed by architect Renzo Piano to mirror the natural topography of San Francisco, our roof has exactly seven hills. This is one of the prep labs where we prepare specimens that will be later be added to our collections.
Specifically, we’re working on specimens that will be added to ornithology and mammology, or birds and mammals. Now we’re going to enter a climate controlled vault where keep specimens that we can’t necessarily put on the public floor. To my left we have the California case. You’ll see there’s a lot of gold in here. Gold is not only our state mineral, but it’s arguably the most important piece in this whole room. Thank you all for attending our platinum behind the scenes tour. I hope you enjoyed your exclusive look at the Academy today.
