At the front of the crowd was a Turki peasant woman with an injured knee, she was whimpering with pain, and when we boarded the bus she took the front seat next to mine. On being told by the conductor that her seat was at the back (the bumpiest ride) she began wailing her agony.
I was surprised because peasant women usually show a more stoic acceptance of pain, but I noticed that her agony disappeared quickly after the conductor had moved on. I was the only European; several of the passengers were moon-faced Hans, wearing drab green or blue Mao clothes.
